The “Other” Tuscany

Colli di Pisa, Etruscan Coast, the Maremma & More!

There two sides to Tuscany – the one you might have seen and the one we’ll show you on The Other Tuscany. Of course on this trip you won’t see the familiar places (Florence, Chianti, Brunello). Instead, you’ll spend a week discovering the other part of this vast region and the specialties it has to offer. There are many tours of Northern Italy, but none quite like this!

Pricing will be based on the number of participants, room occupancy, time of year and any substantial revisions made to the above itinerary. Itinerary and activities subject to change based on time of year and availability.

Colli di Pisa, Etruscan Coast, the Maremma & More!

Arrival in Pisa, (private transfers can be arranged from either the train station or the airport). Settle into your 4-star deluxe accommodations (and spa!).

That evening we will enjoy a welcome dinner in the hotel’s restaurant before starting our big adventure! (D)

Today we’ll make a quick stop to see the famous Leaning Tower (and climb it if you like!). Then we head to our first appointment of the day at a wonderful “frantoio” (olive oil factory) also famous for its kiwis. Here we’ll enjoy a tour of the grounds and then a delicious lunch either in the garden or in their charming dining room. We’re saving dessert for last with a very special visit to one of Italy’s top chocolate producers. We’ll tour and taste before heading back to our hotel in late afternoon.

The evening will be free to enjoy on your own either in hotel’s spa, restaurants or a local trattoria within walking distance (B, L).

We know everyone loves to eat pasta while in bell’Italia, but why not see how it is actually produced by one of the country’s leading pasta companies, that is also family owned and run? One of the most delightful pasta dishes one can have is with fresh truffles. Of course fresh truffles aren’t easy to find, so we will also visit a local truffle hunter (who also makes wine) and taste his products in abundance! After a little down-time at the hotel, we will head to nearby Lucca for an early evening “passagiata” through its labyrinth streets and surrounding walls before delving into a delicious dinner in typical Lucchese style.

Today we move a bit farther south to the Etruscan Coast in the Upper Maremma, the land of the “Super Tuscan” wines such as Sassicaia, Tignanello and Ornellaia. Here we start the day with a tour of the Ornellaia winery followed by a formal lunch featuring some of Italy’s top wine. Afterward, we’ll have a little time to visit the charming village of Bolgheri.

In late afternoon, we’ll make our way to our luxurious accommodations in the coastal town of San Vincenzo. That night we’ll have a light lunch at the hotel’s fabulous restaurant. (B, L, D)

Today we visit the village of Suvereto where you will enjoy a tour and simple lunch and tasting in a converted 13th century “frantoio.” After this, we head to the fabulous (and architecturally interesting) Petra winery to try their specialities such as Ebo, Quercegobbe, and Petra.

We return to the hotel in late afternoon. Dinner will be served in the hotel’s restaurant (B, L, D)

Today we’re moving even farther south into the heart of the Maremma and visiting the Maremma National Park for a walk in some of Italy’s most beautiful nature reserves – located on the sea. Afterward we will enjoy the tastes of the Maremma at Fattoria Le Pupille, which features small local dishes and one of our favorite wines, Morellino di Scansano. Late afternoon we arrive at our last destination and our 4-star accommodations in Porto Santo Stefano on the Monte Argentario.

The evening will be free to enjoy on your own with plenty of nice restaurants right in the village. (B,L)

On our last day we will visit Pitigliano, a medieval village built into high tufa cliffs. The village has been chiseled, over the years, into thousands of caves and tower-houses. Then it’s on to Sovana, considerd one of the most beautiful hamlets in Italy. Lunch will be served in a small farmhouse in the countryside.

That night we will celebrate our wonderful week together with a final “farewell” dinner at a 2-star Michelin restaurant.

Today we bid you “arrivederci” and hope you leave our corner of the world with wonderful memories and treats from your stay. Transfers to the Grosseto train station will be arranged and/or we can assist you in staying a few extra days in Italy. BUON VIAGGIO!
