On Walks, Wines & Wonders of the Italian Riviera, you’ll enjoy a very special and intimate look into our “neighborhood”! Liguria is a region of Italy close to our hearts. On this tour you’ll learn about the region’s culture, cuisine and wine. You’ll also learn the local gossip and folklore that makes Liguria so unique. Tours of northern Italy don’t get more “insider” than Walks, Wines & Wonders of the Italian Riviera!

Walks, Wines & Wonders of the Italian Riviera Itinerary

Arrival in Levanto, (private transfers can be arranged for those not coming by train). Settle into your lovely sea view accommodations and then enjoy a welcome wine tasting with light dinner at a private home overlooking Le Cinque Terre. (D)

After breakfast, we will start the day with a leisurely hike from Levanto to Monterosso. Your host will show you around her “hometown”, then take you on to the picturesque village of Vernazza for lunch in a medieval tower. After lunch, you will have the choice of either hiking back to Monterosso or taking the train.

The evening will be yours to enjoy on your own. (B, D)

Today is a very full day. We’ll start early with our driver taking you to the enchanting and underrated city of Genova. Discover its glorious past, hidden beauty, interesting and authentic atmosphere. We will walk the “Strada Nuova” and see many of its beautiful palaces in elegant Ligurian architecture, explore the carruggi (little streets) of the old city, the exotic Mercato Orientale, visit the Palazzo Ducale and stroll along the seaside promenade for a look into Genoa’s thriving port and world famous aquarium.

After lunch we’ll head south to Portofino, Known as Italy’s resort of the rich and famous, explore the small village, port and its surrounding area. There will also be time for an early, light dinner along the way home. (B, L, D)

A wonderful hike, wine tasting a lunch are in store for you today! You will take the train to Riomaggiore and hike up to the hillside village of Volastra for a visit a local vintner and his unique white wines, then on to a fabulous little home for a traditional Ligurian meal with a twist (and a view!)

This is also “transfer” day to Lerici, While you are exploring, our driver will take your luggage to your 4-star, sea view accommodations and also pick you up in La Spezia at the end of the day. Your host will meet you for an aperitivo and light dinner at a private home before retiring for the evening. (B, L, D)

Lerici is known as the “Pearl of the Gulf of Poets” with its commanding fortress, quaint harbor and “tromp l’oeil” buildings. We consider Portovenere the top “Gem of Ligurian” with its dramatic position upon the sea and lively culture still characteristic on an old seafaring village protecting itself from pirates! We will “connect” the two with a short boat ride from Lerici to Portovenere and lots of fun stories and sights in between.

The evening will be free to enjoy on your own. We will provide you with plenty of restaurant recommendations. (B, L)

Spend the afternoon enjoying three very different “activities” that spread across two Italian regions: Liguria and Tuscany. First, venture to the caves of Carrara where the most famous marble in the world can to be found in the mountains and where you’ll have a chance to tour a working marble quarry. Afterward we’ll head to the border of Liguria & Tuscany for a fun & delicious wine tasting and light dinner at one of Liguria’s finest wineries. (B, L)

The morning will be reserved for one last hike in the Montemarcello National Park where you will enjoy one of the most incredible views in Italy, plus a visit to the gorgeous little hamlet of Montemarcello.

The afternoon will be free to pack or relax before we head out for one last “Dinner Gala” at a Michelin 1-star restaurant. (B, D)

DAY 8: LERICI to ?
Today we bid you “arrivederci” and hope you leave our corner of the world with wonderful memories and treats from your stay. Transfers to the La Spezia train station will be arranged and/or we can assist you in staying a few extra days in Italy. BUON VIAGGIO!

7 nights accommodations in 4-star accommodations; meals as indicated with B = breakfast, L = Lunch, D = Dinner, private transfers from Levanto train station and to the La Spezia train station, transportation during tour; private guided tours, all wine and olive oil tastings as mentioned, your BVI travel host, gratuities.
